Students at J.H. Hines Elementary School are splashing their way through physical education classes and enjoying the benefits of having the Doris Miller Branch YMCA as a neighbor and Adopt-a-School partner.
Each Monday through Thursday, students in kindergarten through second-grade spend a portion of their physical education class time in the YMCA swimming pool learning water safety skills and basic swim strokes. The multi-week lessons feature a curriculum called “Swim to Safety.”
J.H. Hines Elementary Physical Education Teacher Inga Monreal coordinates the program and accompanies the students each day. The Doris Miller Branch YMCA, located on QuinnCampus at 1020 Elm Avenue, is allowing the school to use the facility at no cost and also provides an instructor for the classes.
The classes begin at 12:30 p.m. and end at 2:30 p.m. each day.
