BELLMEAD MAYOR CHOSEN

Kevin Wilson has now been chosen as Mayor of the City of Bellmead.  This ends a lengthy stalemate that left the small Central Texas town without a mayor.  Wilson had claimed that it was his right under long standing tradition of the council to have his turn.  The Mayor in Bellmead is chosen from among the council members. At the past several meetings the vote has ended in a 3-3 tie.  And while some observers had claimed racism since Wilson is black, council members voting against him vigorously denied that,  saying they disagreed with his stand on a city ordinance.

The disagreement centered on an ordinance that would require city businesses to end the practice of using large trailers for storage.  The newly elected council members oppose the ordinance saying it would force at least two local businesses to close down. Wilson had supported a compromise plan and those opposed to him had claimed this was what was triggering their "no" vote,  not his race.
